What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a smaller court with a slightly modified tennis net, using solid paddles and a plastic ball with holes. What makes pickleball especially popular is that it’s easy to learn, low-impact, and fun for all ages — from kids to seniors.
Originally invented in 1965, pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, with courts popping up in neighborhoods, schools, parks, and recreation centers across the country.
What Does a Pickleball Court Look Like?
A standard pickleball court is:
-
20 feet wide and 44 feet long (the same size as a doubles badminton court)
-
Divided into left and right service areas, with a non-volley zone (called the “kitchen”) near the net
-
Can be built outdoors or indoors
-
Often placed on a converted tennis or basketball court or as a standalone feature in a park
Courts are typically built with a hard surface like asphalt or concrete, and surrounded by fencing to keep the ball in play. A single pickleball court can fit comfortably in smaller park areas, making it an ideal feature for community parks like Ethel Fuller Park.
