Community Workshop scheduled for Village Comprehensive Plan

INTRO

Village of Moravia is in need of a Comprehensive Plan. A thorough Comprehensive Plan process was last conducted more than 50 years ago in 1965, with a brief update in 1992. The lack of a relevant Comprehensive Plan means that the Village is unable to guide development in a consistant, cohesive manner. The Village has struggled to understand the community's needs and provide vision and guidance for future development. This has made it difficult for the Village to pursue grant funding and undertake necessary infrastructure improvement projects as these endeavors are typically built on the foundation of a community-based Comprehensive Plan.

The Village of Moravia is currently working on developing a new Comprehensive (or Master) plan to update and replace the current plan that was developed in 1965. The Village will develop a Comprehensive Plan that focuses on adaptability to climate change. Since the village is prone to flooding, future land use decisions will have to be made with sensitivity to the risks of extreme weather events. Developing a Comprehensive Plan is a necessary first step toward making these informed land use decisions.

The Comprehensive Plan will consist of ten sections, each section covering one of the following topics:

  1. Population, Housing & other Demographics
  2. Natural Resources & Environmental Quality
  3. Cultural, Recreational and Historic resources
  4. Community facilities and Infrastructure
  5. Transportation
  6. Downtown Revitalization
  7. Economic Development
  8. Hazard Mitigation, Climate Change and Public Safety
  9. Energy Use, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Government Operations Climate Action Plan
  10. Land Use and Zoning (both current and future)

A Steering Committee comprised of members of the Village community, Village Planning Board and ZBA, Moravia School District, Town government and citizens has formed and is actively preparing a community survey. It has also scheduled a Community Workshop Thursday, Feb 28, 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Moravia Firehouse (38 Keeler Ave)

Your Help is needed in forming the vision for the future. Your input will help us identify issues facing the community and develop goals and strategies to ensure the best future for upcoming generations.
